Portrait Embroidery Course

This course is aimed at folks who already embroider and are looking to advance their skills.

​

During this course, you will be guided by an expert tutor to create a beautiful and personalised portrait embroidery - a wonderful keepsake, heirloom, or gorgeous, thoughtful gift!

​

The course is run one Sunday a month - 4 hours per session, and there will be an opportunity to embroider during each class, but it would be expected that a little homework is done between sessions.

Session 1 - Intro to portrait embroidery
  - What is portrait embroidery? Styles, Effects, and Terminology
  - Composition, resolution, and colour
  - Tracing and pattern making
  - colour scheme
  - Practice stitching
  - Starting to Stitch
  - To do at home - Work on the coarse structures and large areas

Session 2 - Continuing to Stitch
  - Working up from coarse to fine details
  - Eyes and mouths
  - Shading
  - Stitches, placement, and texture (using a practise template)
  - Textures and movement, and intro to embellishment
  - Hair and Fabric
  - Highlights and lowlights
  - To do at home - Continue finer detail and choose 1 element of embellishment after research

Session 3 - Finishing your pieces
  - Intro to beading, appliqué, and stumpwork
  - Working on embellishment
  - Finishing edges
  - Outlines and fine details
  - Backing the hoop
  - Admiring finished pieces!
